Brooks Ghost Max 4 Review: Specs, Fit and Price

The Ghost Max is the shoe we recommend most often to people who walk into the store and say “I want to feel as little as possible underfoot”. With version 4, Brooks has stripped weight, narrowed the heel platform and made the rocker more pronounced. The result is the most runnable Ghost Max of the series — but it has not become a fast shoe. It is still a companion for easy miles, long runs and hours on your feet.

The idea behind the Ghost Max

The Ghost Max is not the Ghost’s big sister: it is a different shoe. The classic Ghost is a neutral, balanced daily trainer; the Ghost Max was built around a narrower brief — protection. High stack, wide base, moderate drop and a geometry that carries the foot forward rather than asking it to push.

It is the shoe for people who run to feel good, not to run fast: anyone stacking up easy miles, coming back from a lay-off, or spending all day on their feet at work and wanting one shoe that does both. It is also one of the few in the range that takes an orthotic without complaint, which is why it so often ends up on the feet of customers who arrive with a custom insole.

Sources disagree on stack height: international reviews report between 38.6 and 40 mm at the heel and between 29.6 and 34 mm at the forefoot. What matters to the buyer is the drop Brooks states — 6 mm — and the feel, which is of a decidedly tall shoe that nonetheless stays planted.

The key technologies

  1. DNA LOFT v3 — the nitrogen-infused midsole foam. It is the same one used in the Ghost Max 3: soft to the touch and underfoot when standing, but it firms up as soon as you run. It is not a responsive foam and does not pretend to be: it absorbs, it does not return.
  2. GlideRoll Rocker — the curved geometry under heel and forefoot. On the 4 it is more pronounced than on the previous generation: the foot rolls forward almost by itself and the heel-to-toe transition asks less of the ankle. This is the change you feel most.
  3. Wide base and low drop — the combination that delivers stability without adding rigid control elements. The shoe is neutral, but it stands up on its own: useful if your form gets untidy once fatigue sets in.
  4. Engineered mesh upper — breathable, with generous padding on the tongue and collar. The tongue is not gusseted.
  5. Internal volume built for orthotics — the last leaves enough vertical room to fit an orthopaedic insole without losing lockdown.

Comfort and fit

Here comes an honest warning, because this is where the online purchase most often goes wrong. The Ghost Max 4 fits short, with a more tapered toe box than the 3. Several reviews recommend going up half a size, and anyone with a wide foot or a bulky orthotic should start straight from the wide-fit version where it is available.

That said, static comfort is excellent: generous padding, a soft upper, no obvious pressure points. The heel holds well. Narrow feet, on the other hand, may find the volume excessive and need to cinch the laces hard.

Our advice is always the same, and it counts double on this model: come and try them on, ideally with the socks you run in and with your own orthotic if you use one. If you are ordering online, get in touch first and we will talk sizing through with you.

How it feels on the run

The dominant impression is of a shoe that rolls. The rocker does most of the work: you land, the foot runs forward, you toe off. There is no bounce, none of that spring the latest-generation foams deliver — there is protection and continuity.

DNA LOFT v3 feels soft when you walk and stiffens when you run. Coming from very compliant shoes it can even feel slightly hard at first contact; if you are heavier, or you run on tarmac every day, that firmness is exactly why the shoe lasts and does not bottom out.

Stability is the strong point. Despite the height, the wide base and redesigned heel keep the shoe planted even in the closing kilometres of a long run, when form starts to fray.

Who it is for and who it is not for

It is for you if:

  • you run easy and long, and want to finish the session with your legs intact
  • you weigh over 75-80 kg and want a shoe that will not pack out after 300 km
  • you use an orthotic and struggle to find shoes that accept one
  • you alternate running and walking, or spend many hours on your feet
  • you are coming back from a lay-off and want maximum protection

It is not for you if:

  • you are after tempo work, intervals or progressions: wrong shoe, too heavy and not responsive enough
  • you have a narrow foot and do not fancy fighting the lacing
  • you expect the elastic feel of PEBA foams: it is not here
  • you want a lightweight racing shoe

What has changed since the Ghost Max 3

Three concrete differences:

The weight. From the Ghost Max 3’s stated 317.5 g down to 292 g for the men’s 4: roughly 25 grams less, which on a shoe in this category you notice on foot.

The heel platform. It has been narrowed: the shoe is less blocky and changes direction more naturally, without giving up stability.

The rocker. More pronounced, especially at the forefoot. This is what makes the 4 the most runnable of the series.

What has not changed: the foam. DNA LOFT v3 is the same, and it remains the model’s limitation — energy return is below the category average. If you are looking for midsole innovation, this is not the generation that gives it to you.

How it handles different sessions

  • Easy and recovery runs — its home ground. Maximum protection, no extra muscular demand.
  • Long slow runs — very good. Stable to the end, it does not pack out.
  • Tempo — doable, but you feel the weight. Not its job.
  • Intervals and race pace — no. You need something else.
  • Walking and hours on your feet — excellent, arguably the best shoe in the Brooks range for this use.
  • Hard-packed gravel and farm tracks — acceptable on even ground, the tread holds. It is not a trail shoe.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Exceptionally smooth transition thanks to the rocker
  • Very stable despite the high stack
  • 25 grams lighter than the Ghost Max 3
  • Takes orthotics better than almost anything else in the range
  • Comfortable, well-padded upper
  • Durable outsole

Cons

  • Fits short: half a size up is almost always needed
  • Tapered toe box, tight for wide feet
  • Unchanged midsole, not very responsive
  • Non-gusseted tongue
  • No reflective detailing

One note for anyone looking to save: the Ghost Max 3 is still with us in a few sizes at a reduced price. It does not have the 4’s rocker and it is heavier, but the midsole is the same and so is the protection. If your size is there, it is a very good deal — call us or drop in to check availability, because remaining stock goes quickly.

Is it worth it?

If you are looking for a shoe to set personal bests in, no: this is not its category and it does not even try to be.

If instead you want the shoe that makes your easy days run well, that holds up through long runs without collapsing, that welcomes your orthotic and leaves you comfortable at the end of the day even just walking, the Ghost Max 4 is one of the best choices on the market. Version 4 fixes the model’s two historic flaws — the weight and the clumsiness — without touching what already worked.

One final recommendation, because it is the number one cause of returns on this model: try them before you buy them. The short fit and narrow toe box are the difference between a perfect shoe and one that annoys you at the third kilometre. Come and see us, bring your orthotic if you use one, and let’s take a few steps together.
