The Ghost Max is the shoe we recommend most often to people who walk into the store and say “I want to feel as little as possible underfoot”. With version 4, Brooks has stripped weight, narrowed the heel platform and made the rocker more pronounced.     The idea behind the Ghost Max<\/h2>\n

    The Ghost Max is not the Ghost’s big sister: it is a different shoe. The classic Ghost is a neutral, balanced daily trainer; the Ghost Max was built around a narrower brief \u2014 protection. High stack, wide base, moderate drop and a geometry that carries the foot forward rather than asking it to push.<\/p>\n

    It is the shoe for people who run to feel good, not to run fast: anyone stacking up easy miles, coming back from a lay-off, or spending all day on their feet at work and wanting one shoe that does both.     Sources disagree on stack height: international reviews report between 38.6 and 40 mm at the heel and between 29.6 and 34 mm at the forefoot. What matters to the buyer is the drop Brooks states \u2014 6 mm \u2014 and the feel, which is of a decidedly tall shoe that nonetheless stays planted.<\/p>\n

      Comfort and fit<\/h2>\n

      Here comes an honest warning, because this is where the online purchase most often goes wrong. The Ghost Max 4 fits short, with a more tapered toe box than the 3.<\/strong> Several reviews recommend going up half a size, and anyone with a wide foot or a bulky orthotic should start straight from the wide-fit version where it is available.<\/p>\n

      That said, static comfort is excellent: generous padding, a soft upper, no obvious pressure points. The heel holds well. Narrow feet, on the other hand, may find the volume excessive and need to cinch the laces hard.<\/p>\n

      How it feels on the run<\/h2>\n

      The dominant impression is of a shoe that rolls. The rocker does most of the work: you land, the foot runs forward, you toe off. There is no bounce, none of that spring the latest-generation foams deliver \u2014 there is protection and continuity.<\/p>\n

      DNA LOFT v3 feels soft when you walk and stiffens when you run. Coming from very compliant shoes it can even feel slightly hard at first contact; if you are heavier, or you run on tarmac every day, that firmness is exactly why the shoe lasts and does not bottom out.<\/p>\n

      Stability is the strong point. Despite the height, the wide base and redesigned heel keep the shoe planted even in the closing kilometres of a long run, when form starts to fray.<\/p>\n
